Trend Report—Week of 1/29/16: FIT Back to School Special

After their 30 days of downtime concluded with one totally tubular snowstorm, the student body of the Fashion Institute of Technology seemed a little reluctant to get back into the swing of crazy commute schedules and three hour lectures. Unlike the beginning of the Fall Semester, FIT students kept it casual for their first day of school “Outfit Of The Day”. The majority of the girls I saw on campus wore minimal makeup and gently tousled hair, and I noticed a lot of girls (and guys) wearing a pretty basic and functional outfit formula.

The biggest outfit trend at FIT right now is a black turtleneck and “alternative” jeans, paired with a practical pair of boots. Most black turtlenecks I saw were thin and form fitting—perfect for layering under a thick wool coat and infinity scarf for the walk to campus. I also saw a few chunky sweaters that were cropped at the waist. The black turtlenecks are paired with a pair of jeans that had a paper bag waist, frayed cut offs, patchwork, or were ripped at the knees. The basic dark wash skinny jeans are being saved for the second week of classes.

Slush season is here to stay, and FIT students didn’t think it was worth it show off their new Stan Smiths this week. Instead, students (commuters and dorm dwellers alike) trudged their way to class in lug sole Hunter, Sperry, Timberland, or Sorrel boots. Students personalized them with fun patterns, interesting color combinations, and tall socks. All around, the sensible winter staple was embraced, and no one brought “cuter” shoes to change into once they settled into class. Here’s to another great semester!
