Trend Report–Week of 9/4/2015: Back to COOL

During the Fashion Institute of Technology’s first week of classes, minimalistic dressing dominated over crazy prints and embellished accessories, which was a change of pace from previous semesters. An a-line black dress was the most frequently spotted wardrobe piece, and white sneakers—Adidas Stan Smiths or Superstars, specifically—were the most common footwear to top off the modern minimalist outfit . Students styled their first day outfits with understated jewelry and simple hair and makeup, giving off an “effortless cool” vibe.

I was also a part of the black A-line dress trend. I like that the dress is a transitional piece for fall. In October and November, the black dress will look great layered with a sweater, cardigan, and tights, while right now it still allows open air flow during the 90 degree days of late August- early September.

The “Athleisure” trend is remaining a strong aesthetic for hip twenty somethings in both New York and Los Angeles, and white sneakers are the number one “step class to street style” wardrobe must have. White sneakers are an obvious pre-fall favorite, and already being covered by multiple fashion websites. FIT students definitely took notice, and paired their fresh out of the box Adidas, Nikes, Yeezys, etc. with boyfriend jeans, skater skirts, and of course, black A-Line dresses.

Since mom took your first picture in front of the big yellow school bus, first day of school outfits are created for the world (and grandma) to see and remember. In my personal back to school fashion post, I said, “The first day/week of classes allows you to put the best version of yourself front and center;” and these were the two back to school trends that a lot of FIT students thought represented the best version of themselves.
