NYFW Trends: February 2018

February 15, 2018

I have always found the Fall/Winter shows in February to be much more interesting than the Spring/Summer shows in September. It might be because I love sweaters, pants, and jackets more than I like sundresses and open-toed shoes, but I also like how the unpredictable winter weather forces everyone to huddle inside and focus on the clothes rather than the theatrics of, say, a carnival at South Street Seaport. The harsh wind tunnels and unforgiving precipitation in New York forces fashion week attendees to get creative with their street style looks.  The biggest and the greatest then offer really interesting ideas of what it means to get dressed for winter.

Here are four new ideas spotted at New York Fashion Week:

What a Puff

February is when the Snow Miser kicks things into high gear: he never wants to see a day that's over 40 degrees and there's always a chance of surprise snow at 11am. The fashion calendar does not bargain with Mother Nature and we all just have to deal with it. In years past, Fashion Week attendees have layered leather jackets under fur coats, embraced the blanket scarf, and stretched the utility of faux fur and shearling. This year, attendees are taking cues from Balenciaga and Vetements and letting themselves not freeze to death waiting for Phil Oh to take their picture. The technicolor puffer jacket is a fantastic happy medium for looking cool and keeping warm.

And, she comes in colors everywhere:

Red // Orange // Yellow // Green // Blue // Purple // Metallic

It's Easy Being Kelly Green

Pantone's 2017 Color of the Year was Greenery: a vibrant, earthy green widely recognized as Kermit's complexion. It is an optimistic and refreshing twist to the army green we have been seeing for the last couple of years. Cardi B wore a fabulous green pantsuit to the Christian Siriano show, and even stoic Anna Wintour was wearing a cheerful, green floral dress at the Alexander Wang show the following night. We should expect to see a lot more of this color this year especially when Spring comes into bloom.

Here are some things to buy now to put you ahead of the trend:

Tibi // Gucci // Puma // Urban Outfitters

Power Moves

A well tailored suit makes every woman look powerful, and honestly it takes a lot of guesswork out of perfecting an outfit formula. Bursts of color, and fun patterns head-to-toe look more couture than cubicle, and fabrics like wool and corduroy are preferred in 18 degree wind chills. Several women including Kendall Jenner and Naomi Campbell wore matching suits to the Off___White after party, and insiders Elaine Welteroth and Camila Coelho, were also seen wearing suits showing us that a matching suit does not have to be masculine or boring.

Here are some suits to defeat the patriarchy in:

Topshop // The Frankie Shop // Theory // H&M

Painting the Town Red

I wasn't going to talk about The Red Trend because it has been covered in so many other places, but Jeez Louise red was EVERYWHERE this week. Bags, shoes, hair accessories, suits, furs, sunglasses, all of the above, RED RED RED. The fierceness of red makes Millennial Pink look meek and dated, and its versatility is unmatched. Clearly in 2018, Red is the New Black.

Here are some red hot pieces to buy now:

Nordstrom // Valentino // & Other Stories // Kate Spade
